Secured landfill to be ready at Vaniyambadi in three-four weeks
VANIYAMBADI: Tanneries at Ambur and Vaniyambadi are working on plans to cut production cost to pay for putting in place a sophisticated technology for effluent treatment.

VANIYAMBADI: The tannery units in Vaniyambadi and Ambur must stick to certain standards prescribed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) before discharging effluents into the waterbodies, N. Sundara Devan, Chairman, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Chennai, said here on Tuesday.
Participating in a function to inaugurate a Primary Treatment Section in the Common Effluent Treatment Plant built at the cost of Rs.4.45 crore with assistance from the Department of Industrial Planning and Policy , at Valayampet near Vaniyambadi, he said the tannery units should expedite the process of achieving zero discharge through Reverse Osmosis process.
VANIYAMBADI: The Vaniyambadi Municipality in Vellore district has decided to take steps to eradicate child labour and improve the basic infrastructure in all municipal schools. A decision in this regard was taken at a District Education Committee meeting held here on Thursday. Municipal chairman V. Sivaji Ganesan presided.
Vaniyambadi is one of the taluk headquarters in the district where child labour has been extensive. According to social activists, child labour was more in areas such as Alangayam and Jafferabath. Children were forced to work owing to financial problems at home. Most of the residents worked at low tension tannery units. Another occupation was beedi rolling. People who worked in the tannery units got minimal daily wages and this was one of the reasons they forced their children to work, the activists said.
